Creative office, Downtown LA

Inspired by the minimal sculpture of Carl Andre and concrete Brutalist architecture, Corinne redesigned the reception of a leading fashion communications agency in Downtown LA and contributed custom-designed furniture.

Reinforcing her desire to work collaboratively, the genesis of the project began with a series of largely monochrome images that her client provided: pictures of light sculptures, wooden blocks, ikebana. This created an abstract atmosphere – something sparse, industrial, grounded – that guided her design direction.

Brutalist influences speak in the concrete custom Swenson benches. Dark walnut adds depth, warmth and a contrast of color. Blocks of carved Douglas fir wood bring the outside in and create a tactile ambience when paired with fur, linen, stone and clay. The experience of any space is informed by both touch and sight. Here, natural materials are used to soften the concrete furniture and warm an industrial space, creating an environment that is not brutal at all, but beautiful.

I design furniture that is strong and solid; pieces that invite a patina over time to reveal layers of history and personal stories.
